Locked in a BOX

Cavernous Isolata is a series of isolation experiments whereby the imagination and the creative process are given priority by removing food and other forms of distraction including books and the internet.

This work has been an effort to offer something back to the gifts I have been given and to question my own role within the creative process.

Cavernous Isolata iii

Locked in a box on Stephen Avenue for 5 days and nights, I painted myself into isolation from passersby over the course of a work week. With no food and limited sleep, I made a series of paintings that explored the urban surroundings and responded to the public interactions and connections.

Isolated in a cave just outside of the city of Hasankyf in Eastern Turkey, this work challenged me by exploring the idea of archeological vandalism within close proximity to Tigris River. The caves in this region may have been inhabited as early as 1850 BC.

3 days and nights with no food, this painting resulted in a work about fear and discomfort.

Despite local and international objections, the city of Hasankyf and its archaeological sites have been flooded as part of the Ilısu Dam project. By 1 April 2020, water levels reached an elevation of 498.2m, covering the whole town.

Cavernous Isolata

The first of these isolation project series which took place in a converted garden shed. The project took place over 3 days and nights with no food and no rest from artificial lights. The work attempted to draw from the unconscious to gain insight the energy that is present during a creative process. The results were a graphite drawing that spanned the walls of the space.
