Creating an artwork using old desks

As the Calgary downtown Marriott Hotel was undergoing renovations, I was approached to create an artwork for the hotel’s reopening celebration. During renovations the custom desks made for each room back in the 1970’s were considered obsolete and were to be thrown away. Instead of creating a temporary project, I negotiated using these old desks to create a permanent work for the hotel’s second floor lobby.

The work is an exploration of time and place, referencing the geological location of Calgary as well as the unique history of the Marriott itself.
